1 in 250 Arkansas AP Students is a Student with a Disability

Where's my chance? The federal Office of Civil Rights (OCR) now has a database where you can look up your school district's racial, disability, and English language learner child statistics. The data goes back to 2009 or earlier. You can look up information by Arkansas school district or school.

Most distressing when looking at Students With Disabilities information from OCR is the lack of such students in AP classes. Arkansas has a very generous and extensive AP program, with high schools required to offer these potential college credit courses. Arkansas even covers the exam fees for all students. OCR is now reporting these AP enrollment statistics to see if minority, disabled, and English language learner children are being prepared for college.

10,285 Arkansas students were enrolled in AP classes in 2009. Of that number, only 40 students with disabilities were enrolled in AP classes. Yup, 40 students, or 1 in 250 Arkansas AP students, were students with disabilities. In contrast, 1 in 9 Arkansas students is a student with a disability according to 2009 OSEP IDEA B data.

Of course some disabled students may not be able to take advantage of AP classes, but for students with disabilities these classes should be an option.

Here's a list of all high schools who had students with disabilities in their AP classes. Student access to honors classes happens in clumps--there are 5 to 10 AP students with disabilities at each of these schools:

  • Beebe High School
  • Bentonville High School
  • Central High School of Little Rock School District
  • Hall High School of Little Rock School District
  • Parkview High School of Little Rock School District
  • Rogers High School
  • Springdale High School

In particular the Beebe and Parkview High Schools had relatively high percentages of students with disabilities. It's great to see these Arkansas high schools working to get our students ready for higher education with AP courses.

On the roll of dishonor are some large districts and schools who had zero students with disabilities in their AP classes in the 2009 data. I only looked at districts or schools with more than 200 AP students. Any statisticians out there are welcome to help me improve my analysis:

  • Bryant High School: 0 of 235 AP students
  • Cabot High School: 0 of 200 AP students
  • Conway School District: 0 of 355 AP students
  • Heritage High School of Rogers: 0 of 260 AP students
  • PCSSD: 0 of 575 AP students
